A Story About Friendship, Wine, and Finding Beauty in Unexpected Places

There is a moment that changes things — a conversation you didn’t plan to have, with someone you weren’t expecting to meet, in a place you almost didn’t go. For Paragon’s owner John, that moment happened at a wine bottle signing in Walla Walla.
It was the year 2000. John was wine tasting at Woodward Canyon, a winery with roots stretching back to the 1970s and a long tradition of featuring a local artist’s work on their annual Cabernet Sauvignon label. That year, the featured artist was Squire Broel, and he was there, signing bottles.
John introduced himself. They started talking. And somewhere between the wine and the conversation, a friendship began.
Squire is a Walla Walla original in the truest sense. Trained in art courses at Whitman College while still in high school, his work carries the kind of rootedness that only comes from truly belonging to a place. He has operated Broel Studio, Inc. in Historic Downtown Walla Walla since 1999, where he continues to work today.
John became a patron of Squire’s when he purchased an original piece called, Garden of Delights, for his home. What followed was the kind of friendship that grew slowly and genuinely: dinners together, wine shared, a mutual appreciation for craft and place. The details of how the arrangement came together are wonderfully informal, as the best things often are. But the result is something that sets Paragon apart in a way no interior designer could manufacture: every Paragon apartment features Squire’s art.
Paragon has been given the rights to print Squire’s work, and his pieces live in furnished apartments across our markets, greeting guests who are arriving somewhere new, perhaps a little tired from travel, and finding something unexpectedly beautiful on the wall. Art that was created by a real person, in a real studio, in a small city in Eastern Washington, called Walla Walla.
